The "Hungry Water" Effect

Part 2

Beyond the Damage – Analysis & Recovery

A Forensic Approach to Pool Surface Recovery

As we mentioned in our last update, seeing plaster "pop" or feeling like sandpaper is disheartening—but it doesn't always mean a total demolition is your only path forward. The key to saving a pool surface is a forensic approach rather than a "one size fits all" patch job.

The "Tap Test" Analysis

The "Tap Test" Analysis - Before we talk dollars or diamonds, we have to determine the extent of the failure. Our technicians use a process called Acoustic Sounding

The Method

We methodically tap the surface across the entire pool vessel.

The Goal

A clear, sharp ring indicates the plaster is still well-bonded to the gunite. A dull, hollow thud reveals air gaps or voids—signs of delamination beneath the surface.

The Verdict

- If less than 15–20% of the surface sounds hollow, localized repairs may be practical.

- If more than that is affected, a full resurface is typically required to restore integrity and ensure a watertight seal.

Resolution Solutions

Your Repair Path: What Happens Next

Depending on the severity of the LSI etching or the freeze-thaw damage, we typically propose three tiers of resolution.

Preventing the "Hungry Water" Cycle

To ensure your next surface lasts 15+ years instead of 5, we recommend -

Off-Season LSI Management Plan - This includes Off-Season LSI Management Plan

Tips for Preventing the 'Hungry Water' Cycle

Extend your pool plaster's lifespan from 5 years to 15+ with a proactive LSI Management Plan, especially during the off-season. Focus on stabilizing water chemistry to avoid aggressive "hungry water" that etches plaster.

Fall Calcium Boost - Raise calcium hardness toward season's end to create a protective buffer as temperatures drop and water becomes more corrosive. This simple step helps maintain LSI balance through winter.

Solid Safety Covers - Install high-quality covers to minimize organic debris buildup, which can spike pH unpredictably during spring thaw and throw chemistry off balance.

Winter Chemistry Checks - Test water monthly—even when closed—to keep LSI in the ideal balanced range (+0.1 to -0.1). Catch imbalances early to prevent hidden damage.

Five Stars *****

"Matt and Bud did an excellent job repairing my hot tub and explaining what they did and how to troubleshoot going forward. Very knowledgeable about the right chemicals to use as well."

Thank you - LJ

The Forensic Assessment – No More Guesswork

We don’t believe in "guesstimating" the health of your pool. Because Idaho winters are so localized—with micro-climates ranging from the Treasure Valley to the mountains—we utilize a multi-point forensic assessment to determine exactly what’s happening beneath the surface.

Materials Analysis & Core Sampling - We don’t just look at the top layer. By taking core samples, we can see if the bond failure is occurring at the gunite level or within the plaster lifts themselves.

Leak Assessment - Delamination often hides structural cracks. We pressure test and scan for water loss to ensure your new surface won't just be a "band-aid" over a leak.

Drone Mapping - For complex or large-scale renovations, we use aerial mapping to provide precise measurements and 3D modeling of your pool’s footprint.

Efficiency Audit - While the pool is drained, it’s the optimal time to evaluate your pad. We analyze existing equipment to determine whether new technology will improve efficiency   which in many cases can reduce energy costs by 70%.

Five Stars *****

"Bud services my pool perfectly every week and Bud and Colby did a great pool closing for the end of the season, even in the pouring rain. I highly recommend Pool Doctor!
