As we mentioned in our last update, seeing plaster "pop" or feeling like sandpaper is disheartening—but it doesn't always mean a total demolition is your only path forward. The key to saving a pool surface is a forensic approach rather than a "one size fits all" patch job.

The "Tap Test" Analysis

The "Tap Test" Analysis - Before we talk dollars or diamonds, we have to determine the extent of the failure. Our technicians use a process called Acoustic Sounding. 

The Method 

We methodically tap the surface across the entire pool vessel.

The Goal 

A clear, sharp ring indicates the plaster is still well-bonded to the gunite. A dull, hollow thud reveals air gaps or voids—signs of delamination beneath the surface.

The Verdict

- If less than 15–20% of the surface sounds hollow, localized repairs may be practical.

- If more than that is affected, a full resurface is typically required to restore integrity and ensure a watertight seal.

Tips for Preventing the 'Hungry Water' Cycle

Extend your pool plaster's lifespan from 5 years to 15+ with a proactive LSI Management Plan, especially during the off-season. Focus on stabilizing water chemistry to avoid aggressive "hungry water" that etches plaster.

Fall Calcium Boost - Raise calcium hardness toward season's end to create a protective buffer as temperatures drop and water becomes more corrosive. This simple step helps maintain LSI balance through winter.

Winter Chemistry Checks - Test water monthly—even when closed—to keep LSI in the ideal balanced range (+0.1 to -0.1). Catch imbalances early to prevent hidden damage.
